How I fight a cold virus

Updated: Jul 30, 2019

The kids and I are home with a horrible head cold. So, I thought I’d share with you, what I’m doing to support our bodies to get over this awful virus and how I’m using my doTERRA oils?

Every morning and night I take 2 drops of On Guard (protective blend that contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary) and 2 drops of Lemon mixed into a teaspoon of good quality honey. Delicious, soothing and a great immune boost.

For the kids, I soak a thinly sliced apple in a bowl of water with a drop of On Guard and a drop of Lemon for 5-10 minutes, then drain. It provides a delicious, effective and gentle immune boost.

In the shower, I place a drop of Easy Air on the edge (just past where the water reaches), it mixes with the steam to help me breathe more easily.

I add a few drops of Easy Air to each of the bedroom diffusers, to help keep airways clear for a good nights sleep.

I add a drop each of Rosemary, Lime and Copaiba to a few drops of carrier oil, such as Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) and then rub this onto my chest. I then use my t-shirt to make a t-shirt tent and breathe deeply for a few minutes. Rosemary, similar to Eucalyptus, helps support your respiratory system, Copaiba is an anti-inflammatory and Lime is cleansing and supports your immune system. It is very effective, smells fantastic and soooo much nicer than Vicks. If we are dealing with a cough then I add a drop of Cardamom.

I apply my Immune Bomb roller to the soles of my feet about 4 times a day. It containing On Guard, Tea Tree, Lemon, Oregano and Frankincense diluted with FCO. Many of these oils support our immune system and some contain strong anti-viral properties. I only every bring out the Immune Bomb, when I’m really unwell.

I don’t like to use the big guns like Oregano, Cinnamon and Clove on the kids unless I really have to, so Dylan has been using the Kids Collection roller ‘Stronger’, which contains Cedarwood, Litsea, Frankincense and Rose – these more gentler oils are still super effective, just perfect for their little bodies and systems.

I add 2 drops of Lemon, 1 drop of On Guard ,1 drop of Ginger and a teaspoon of honey to slightly cooled boiled water for a delicious immune boosting drink, which is also lovely and soothing on a sore throat and I find the Ginger eases any associated nausea.

I increase my water intake and really love adding a drop of two of a citrus oil or my favourite, Smart & Sassy (metabolic blend that contains Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint, Ginger and Cinnamon) to my water bottle (glass or stainless steel). Please don’t use plastic bottles, as the oils will slowly break down the plastic and you’ll end up drinking those toxins.

Of course, lots of rest. I include Lavender, Balance, Vetiver, Copaiba, Cedarwood and Frankincense in my Sleepy Time and Knock Out blends.

The last thing is extra hugs and cuddles, the anti-depressant like effects of oxytocin helps to lift our mood out of the illness blues.

I hope you’ve found this useful. Let me know if you’d like any of the recipes or help to get these magic oils into your life.
